Hamburger Steaks with Onion and Mushroom Gravy is a hearty dish featuring seasoned beef patties simmered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy. Perfect for serving over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20)
1/2 cup finely diced onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 large egg
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon oil
2 tablespoons butter
1 large onion, sliced
8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 teaspoon fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, diced onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
Shape into 4 to 6 oval patties and press a small indentation in the center of each.
Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4 to 5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
In the same skillet, add butter, sliced onion, and mushrooms. Cook until softened and lightly browned.
Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir for 1 minute.
Gradually add beef broth while stirring. Bring to a simmer until thickened.
Return patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer on low for 10 to 15 minutes until cooked through.
Adjust seasoning and garnish with thyme before serving.
