Savory caramelized onions, seasoned beef, and melted cheese are layered between golden sheets of crescent roll dough for a hearty, French-inspired dinner bake.
1 lb ground beef
2 large yellow onions, sliced
2 tbsp butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp dried thyme or 1 tsp fresh
1/3 cup beef broth
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 egg + 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
Optional: chopped parsley or crispy onions for garnish
Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Melt butter in a skillet and cook onions over medium-low heat for 20–25 minutes until golden and soft.
Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain fat.
Stir in garlic, thyme, broth, and optional Worcestershire. Simmer 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and mix in half the cheese.
Press one can of crescent dough into the baking dish to form a base.
Spread beef mixture over the dough and top with remaining cheese.
Lay second can of dough over the top, seal edges, and brush with egg wash.
Bake for 22–25 minutes or until golden. Let rest before serving.
