pounds ground beef
1 medium onion, diced
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 (15 oz) can crushed tomatoes
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
68 slices French or Italian bread
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 garlic cloves, minced (for butter)
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
Salt and pepper, to taste
Optional: bacon, mushrooms, pickles, jalapeños

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  2. Brown beef in skillet, drain fat.

  3. Add onion and garlic. Cook until soft.

  4. Stir in tomato paste. Add crushed tomatoes and Worcestershire. Simmer 5–7 minutes. Season.

  5. Transfer beef to baking dish and top with cheese.

  6. Brush bread slices with melted butter, garlic, and parsley.

  7. Arrange bread on top of casserole.

  8. Bake for 20–25 minutes. Broil 1–2 minutes for extra crispness.

  9. Let sit 5 minutes before serving.
